Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Mechelse.

Hi Christine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?

Under my leadership as Principal Designer of HouseHome Interior Design, I’ve had the privilege of transforming countless spaces across the country while redefining what personalized, thoughtful design can look like. After receiving multiple recognitions— including the Home and Garden Awards 2025, eight consecutive Best of Houzz honors, and the 2025 Excellence Award from LuxLIFE Magazine—our firm has continued to expand its reach and reputation.

My journey began in a small vintage furniture restoration shop in downtown Denver. That experience taught me the value of craftsmanship, history, and the emotional resonance of well-designed spaces. Over the years, that shop evolved into HouseHome, a boutique interior design firm known for bringing both residential and commercial environments to life in ways that authentically reflect the people who use them.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Like most meaningful endeavors, the journey has included its challenges. For nearly a decade, HouseHome operated with me as the owner and lead designer, supported by one assistant. As demand for our work grew, it became clear that expanding our team and capabilities was essential. We clearly were born with an advantage over other design firms – we made everything about the customer, their lifestyle, aspirations, and included their cherished memories into our concepts. That made us stand apart.

About three years ago, I made the strategic decision to invest significantly in the business—bringing on additional creative talent, specialized experts, and dedicated support for marketing and operations. This allowed me to remain focused on what I do best: envisioning and executing elevated, highly personalized spaces.

Today, HouseHome operates as a true full-service design firm. We offer comprehensive project management; conceptual design; space planning; 3D renderings and elevations; custom feature design and fabrication; and full selections of materials, fixtures, and finishes. Collaboration is at the core of our work—partnering closely with clients, architects, builders, and contractors throughout every stage.

We also follow a meticulous, multi-phase design process to ensure a seamless client experience. Each project begins with an in-depth consultation and estimate, followed by concept development, design refinement, and procurement. From there, we oversee project management through final installation, culminating in our signature Design Day—when clients see their vision fully realized.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

Whether working on a new build, a renovation, or a simple refresh, my team and I approach every project with enthusiasm and creative precision. HouseHome offers a wide spectrum of design solutions, with specialties in historic home restoration, exterior design, hospitality and short-term rental spaces, international design, relocation services, urban lofts and condos, kitchens and baths, and fully custom new-build homes.

Our portfolio spans everything from cozy mountain retreats to vibrant Florida beach houses, showcasing a remarkable range of aesthetics. Our design philosophy is rooted in authenticity, personality, and excellence—values that have enabled us to grow organically into national and international markets. We believe great design should feel both personal and timeless.

One project that garnered particular attention was our Historic Highlands renovation—a 1920s bungalow transformed over four years to restore its original Art Deco character while adding two additional stories and a bespoke whiskey lounge. This project, documented in detail on our website and blog, exemplifies how thoughtful design can honor historical architecture while meeting the needs of contemporary living.

What truly sets HouseHome apart is our commitment to deeply understanding our clients. We listen—not just to what they say, but to how they live—and translate their aspirations into beautiful, functional spaces. We pair this insight with forward-thinking design approaches and a refined aesthetic sensibility that consistently delivers luxury results.

A hallmark of our work is our ability to blend contemporary design with carefully curated vintage elements. This approach not only infuses spaces with character and soul but also supports environmentally conscious design practices—an increasingly important priority across the industry.

What are your plans for the future?

HouseHome is continuing to expand its presence nationwide. Although we already work extensively with clients in multiple states, we plan to establish an additional office and design studio near Nashville within the next couple of years. We feel the region aligns beautifully with our design sensibility, and it offers strategic access to the Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest markets.

Our future growth will continue to be guided by HouseHome’s design ethos: blending the contemporary with the timeless. Many clients are craving a return to the warmth and authenticity of past eras, while still enjoying the conveniences of modern luxury. We excel at striking this balance by incorporating one-of-a-kind elements that tell meaningful stories and create emotional connection.

Our work goes far beyond decorating—I like to say we translate personalities into environments. This philosophy has earned us a stellar reputation among clients and industry peers. The volume of heartfelt testimonials we receive is a constant reminder of the impact thoughtful design can make.

As we grow, our commitment remains unchanged: to deliver exceptional, personalized, and enduringly beautiful spaces, time and time again.
