HouseHome had the rare honor of traveling to France to restore and redesign the master bedroom of a 500-year-old French château, originally built in the 1400s, in one of the most historically significant locations in the region. Overlooking a medieval church, cobblestone courtyard, and original roundabout, this extraordinary suite captures layered European history at every turn.
The original iron balcony railing, tall French doors, and hand-crafted wood shutters were meticulously preserved, allowing the space to remain architecturally authentic while being reimagined for modern luxury living. Now over 80% complete, the bedroom is intentionally designed to feel warm, intimate, and richly textured, enhancing—never competing with—the château’s irreplaceable historical character.
This château holds rare cultural importance, having once hosted King Henry, requiring the direct involvement of the French Historic Preservation Society throughout the project. During restoration, centuries-old wallpaper hidden beneath the walls was uncovered, documented, and cataloged, adding another layer of historical significance to the home. Every design decision was guided by preservation standards to ensure historical integrity, material authenticity, and architectural accuracy remained intact.
Additional areas of the residence—including the kitchen and family room—were also fully renovated, aligning modern livability with centuries-old craftsmanship. This project stands as a defining example of HouseHome’s expertise in international luxury restoration, heritage architecture, and historically sensitive interior design.
