Lighting is the unsung hero of interior design. It can make or break a space, setting the tone for everything from a cozy night to a high-energy dance party. Yet lighting is often an afterthought, relegated to a few strategically placed lamps or an overhead fixture. In reality, each type of lighting plays a crucial role in creating a cohesive, functional, and beautiful space. From a table lamp's soft glow to a pendant light's dramatic flair, the proper lighting can transform a room from ordinary to extraordinary. In this article, we'll explore the importance of two types of fixed lighting in design and provide tips for selecting the perfect fixtures to bring your space to life. So, dim the lights, grab a cup of tea, and let's shed some light on the subject!
In Part One of this series, we will discuss installed lighting.
Wall sconces
Wall sconces are my favorite lighting feature in interior design because they offer the perfect combination of mood, ambiance, and functionality. Their soft glow and romantic ambiance can create a cozy and intimate atmosphere in any room. Being mounted on the wall, they provide a dimmer environment without sacrificing style or practicality. Whether you want to create a relaxing retreat in your bedroom or a cozy nook in your living room, wall sconces are a versatile and effective way to set the mood. Additionally, finding visually appealing wall sconces is incredibly easy, as they can be artwork within themselves that elevates a space to the next level. With wall sconces, you can effortlessly add a touch of sophistication and elegance to your interior design.
One of the best things about wall sconces is that they can be paired with other types of lighting to create a dynamic, layered effect. For example, using wall sconces in combination with pendant light over the dining table can be a game-changer when it comes to entertaining. Instead of harsh overhead lighting, the combination of sconces and a pendant light creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that's perfect for hosting dinner parties and special events. Your guests will be wowed by the Pinterest-worthy dining experience you've created, and you'll love the way your home looks and feels with these romantic, stylish lighting features.
Pendant lights
Pendant lighting is a versatile and stylish way to illuminate any space. With a wide range of styles, sizes, and materials, pendant lighting can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any interior design. They can be used in many different areas of a home, including over a kitchen island, a dining table, a foyer, or even in a bathroom. The right pendant light can add depth and dimension to a room, and its adjustable height can be tailored to fit the space's specific needs. With so many options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to select the perfect pendant light. However, by considering the existing design elements and the desired mood of the room, selecting a pendant light can be a breeze. Whether you prefer a simple, minimalist design or a more ornate and decorative style, a pendant light is perfect for you.
One crucial factor to consider is the height of the ceiling and the line of sight of the viewer. If the pendant light is too low, it can be distracting and obstruct the overall design of the space. However, if the height is just right, a pendant light can add a beautiful focal point that draws the eye upward and creates an illusion of height in the room. Materials are also essential to consider when selecting a pendant light. If the pendant is made of glass or transparent materials, it won't block the view and can even enhance the overall design by adding depth to the space. On the other hand, if the pendant is made of solid or opaque materials, it can create a more defined and dramatic effect. The key is to select a pendant light that complements the overall design and style of the space while also being functional and practical.
At the end of the day, incorporating different types of lighting into your space is all about experimentation. It's like trying on different outfits until you find the one that makes you feel like a rockstar. So don't be afraid to mix and match different lighting options until you find the perfect combination.
