Continuing our journey through the "Historic Highlands" interior design project, let's explore the intimate spaces of this remarkable home - the bedrooms and bathrooms, where historic charm meets modern luxury.
Master Suite
The master bedroom is a masterclass in balanced design, featuring a carefully curated collection of vintage and antique pieces. A stunning wall of collected artwork and mirrors creates an eye-catching focal point, while an elegant curved sofa provides a sophisticated seating area alongside a marble and brass coffee table. The space is anchored by a luxurious faux fur rug, creating layers of texture and comfort.
An art deco armoire, discovered at an estate sale, stands proudly alongside an authentic art deco cedar chest at the foot of the bed. The room's lighting tells its own story - wall sconces and matching vintage lamps add warm, ambient lighting. Custom dark emerald velvet curtains frame the windows, and an Anthropologie tapestry adorns the wall above the bed, creating a perfect balance of old and new elements.
The master bathroom continues the sophisticated aesthetic with custom-designed stained oak vanities topped with quartz counters. Period replica pendants illuminate the space, while Zelige tile in the shower adds a touch of artisanal craftsmanship.
Children's Spaces
The girl's bedroom is a delightful blend of vintage charm and youthful energy. Anthropologie wallpaper creates a whimsical backdrop for painted vintage Jenny Lind beds. A vintage dresser and matching tulip lamps add character, while a thoughtfully curated corner features estate sale finds - a vintage bistro set and bookcase. Perhaps the most touching detail is the pair of matching antique frames above the beds, containing pressed flowers personally selected and preserved by the young residents.
The kids' bathroom showcases the homeowners' attention to detail and personal involvement. The custom penny tile design was a labor of love, with the client personally crafting the classic art deco pattern by hand-placing each contrasting tile. Custom stained oak vanities and linen closets provide ample storage, while dark emerald shower tile adds a bold splash of color.
Powder Room
The powder room is a testament to thoughtful preservation and recreation of historic elements. While the original emerald green pencil tiles couldn't be salvaged, exact replicas were sourced to accent the white subway tile, maintaining the authentic 1920s aesthetic. The original porcelain pedestal sink and solid brass swan faucet were carefully preserved, while the sconces remain in their original location.
The floor showcases another example of the homeowner's dedication to authenticity - a custom-created penny tile design typical of the 1920s, personally crafted by our client. A curved tile shower entry, mirrored in the niche design, adds architectural interest, while unlacquered brass fixtures will develop a beautiful patina over time. Vintage landscape art and an antique aged mirror complete this historically sensitive renovation.
Throughout these private spaces, the "Historic Highlands" project demonstrates how careful preservation, thoughtful recreation, and personal touches can create spaces that honor the past while serving the needs of modern family life. Each room tells its own story while contributing to the larger narrative of this beautifully restored home.
